Toronto Port Lands Company – Internship Program

TPLC provides undergraduate and graduate students with work experience internships throughout the year. We welcome students who are seeking an opportunity to develop skills through mentorship and experiential practice and who are prepared to contribute to TPLC’s operations, goals, and objectives as the largest property owner in the Port Lands. These internships will be of particular interest to those in Planning, Environmental Studies, Marketing, Accounting, and other related disciplines. Work terms are generally for 8-week periods. Position: Development Manager

At CreateTO, we are a catalyst for city building, using our expertise and innovative thinking to help the City make the best use of its real estate to pursue its diverse goals.

CreateTO is part of a new City of Toronto city-wide real estate service delivery model that centralizes all real estate activities and integrates key functions to enable better coordination and execution of real estate strategies.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the VP Development, the Development Manager position will focus on managing: the preparation of development concepts, approvals, sales, joint ventures; preparing site analyses and concepts; managing external consulting teams to assist in obtaining Municipal approvals, variances, severances and permits; working with financial analysts and proformas to prepare development and land value analysis and appraisals as well as make recommendations in formulation of market strategies.

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education with a degree in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Geography or related field
  • 5 years’ experience in real estate development, urban planning, or building design
  • Exposure to financial modeling, master’s level coursework is an asset
  • Ability to confidently present and defend recommendations and initiatives to both the Senior Management team and Board members without feeling intimidated
  • Experience in dealing with a variety of public stakeholders including City Councillors and City Officials and a range of real estate development stakeholders including brokers, consultants and professional advisors
  • Experience working within the political system, strong understanding of the development approval and planning processes and a solid development background is required
  • Experience with developing and analyzing financial proformas and land appraisal fundamentals
  • Ability to build relationships, engage and influence others, and work with diverse internal and external groups
